which consists of three four-hour Core sections and one four-hour Discipline section of your choice.
The Core sections are Auditing and Attestation (AUD), Financial Accounting and Reporting (FAR), and
Taxation and Regulation (REG). The Discipline sections are Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR),
Information Systems and Control (ISC), and Tax Compliance and Planning (TCP).

Step 1: Understand Basic CPA Eligibility Criteria (General for Most States)
Most U.S. states require:
🎓 Education Requirement
• 150 semester credit hours (equivalent to 5 years of education)
• A Bachelor’s degree is mandatory, preferably in accounting or commerce.
• Minimum 1 year (30 credit hours) in accounting-related subjects
• Some states also require 24 semester hours in business subjects
Indian B.Com + M.Com, or B.Com + CA/CPA/CMA combo generally meets this requirement.
Step 2: Get Your International Education Evaluated
You must have your Indian qualifications evaluated by a NASBA-approved credential evaluation agency.
Common Evaluators:
• NASBA International Evaluation Services (NIES) – recommended
• WES (World Education Services) – accepted by some states
• SpanTran, FACS, ECE, etc.
They will convert your Indian academic credits into U.S. semester credit hours.
📄 Documents Needed:
• Degree certificates (B.Com, M.Com, CA, etc.)
• Transcripts/mark sheets
• Passport copy
• Sometimes a syllabus (for certain evaluators)
• Step 3: Choose a CPA-Friendly State for International Candidates
• Some states are more flexible with international degrees. Popular choices for Indian students:
State Pros
Guam Accepts B.Com + CA for 150 credits
Colorado Flexible for Indian M.Com holders
Montana Friendly for CA-inter qualified candidates
Alaska Accepts international qualifications + no SSN needed
New Hampshire No U.S. citizenship/residency requirement
• Choose a state based on your qualification and whether you plan to get a CPA license in future (some states require work under a U.S. CPA to license).
Step 4: Submit Application to State Board (via NASBA)
Once your evaluation is complete:
1. Create an account on NASBA’s CPA Central portal
Link: https://cpacentral.nasba.org
2. Apply to the state board you chose.
3. Pay the application and exam fees.
Step 5: Meet the Experience Requirement (for Licensing, not Exam)
To become a licensed CPA (after clearing the exams):
• You must have 1–2 years of work experience in accounting/audit under a licensed CPA (varies by state).
• You can take the exam without experience, but need it later for the license.
