The FRM focuses on risk management, covering topics such as valuation, risk models, and integrated
risk management. The CFA provides a broader finance perspective but does not delve as deeply into
risk. Many professionals pursue both certifications for a competitive edge in finance.

The FRM certification is globally recognised, with 90,000+ certified professionals working at leading
banks, asset managers, hedge funds, consultancies, and regulatory bodies. It enhances career
opportunities in risk management and finance.

No, but GARP recommends CPD participation to maintain the value of certification. The program
requires earning 40 credits every two years, with one credit per hour of relevant learning.

There are no eligibility requirements for this exam; even individuals who have just completed their
12th grade can take it.

Preparation time varies based on experience. On average, candidates spend 275 hours studying.
Reported study times range from less than 100 to over 400 hours.

The exam is quantitative, but concepts are applied to real-world risk management scenarios. The
difficulty level is similar to an advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate-level finance
course.

No, work experience is not required to sit for the exam. However, to earn the FRM designation,
candidates must submit at least two years of professional work experience within five years of
passing Part II. Relevant experience from up to 10 years prior is also accepted.

The FRM certification has two parts:
FRM Part I
• Focus: Tools used to assess financial risk – Foundations, Quantitative Analysis, Financial Markets, Risk Models
FRM Part II
• Focus: Application of risk management – Market Risk, Credit Risk, Operational Risk, Risk Management in Investment
You must pass Part I before attempting Part II.
You can sit for both parts on the same day, but Part II will only be graded if you pass Part I.

Work Experience Requirement, To become FRM Certified, you must:
• Pass both Part I and Part II
• Gain 2 years of full-time relevant work experience in financial risk management or related roles (e.g., portfolio management, trading, risk consulting, auditing, etc.)
• Submit the experience to GARP within 5 years after passing Part II
Note: You can appear for the exams before completing your 2 years of experience, but you’ll only receive the official FRM certificate after satisfying this condition.
